When I started playing EVE one of the best resources out there was the Cheapfleet Challenge contest on Battleclinic. Basically it was a competition for the best fittings for T1 frigates, destroyers and cruisers, using affordable Meta-3 using and lower gear. It gave me a great starting point for various fits that were affordable and much more effective then my early fail-fit attempts.
Unfortunately their fits are rather old at this point. I think that it is time for a new 'Cheapfleet Challenge'.
Here are the rules:
- This contest is for T1 frigates only. (if there is interest I will do larger ships later)
- Toterra will be the only judge and decision will be final. I will take into account any comments positive and negative from other players about fits. Both fits for fleet and for solo work will be evaluated. If there are a lot of entries I may look for additional judges.
- One entry per character. If you are making a change then mention it at the top of the post.
- Fit will be evaluated for it's PvP ability. I do not care about PvE.
- Any module > Meta-3 will disqualify the fit.
- No Rigs.
- No Faction Frigates.
- If two identical submissions, the first one qualifies. Later submissions are disqualified. <--New
- Grand Prize will be one empire faction frigate from the same faction as the winning fit. (hookbill, firetail, comet or slicer).
- Five 5 million isk prizes will go to honorable mentions, one for each of the following categories (note I changed this on Feb 19):
- best e-war
- best tackler
- best gank
- best ship to bring to a fleet
- best ship for solo work
- Contest will end on March 15, 2011 at midnight EST. (the ides of march)
- Prize will be contracted to winning character from Jita 4-4 by March 22, 2011.

This is a fit for a Breacher. It works best against another solo frigate that has been fit for AB/SCRAM with short range weapons (like 90% of the pvp frigates out there). Set the keep-at-range to 16,000 m, turn on the disruptor and pelt away. If you can hold range and they can't hit you they will eventually die. It can also be a great tackler / scout for a fleet.

ReplyDeleteThis is a fleet tackle Rifter also capable of frigate PvP. With the MWD and disruptor you can catch your target quickly and keep him from warping until you explode. Since this Rifter uses Cap Booster 150 charges, you can run both armor repairers and the disruptor until you run out of charges (with the MWD off and Nosferatu on).

Cheap artillery Rifter to be used against other T1 frigs mostly. Approach carefully and orbit at around 13 km (OH web if you can). Avoid drones, and MWD/long range fits. If anyone gets close you die.

Engage anything you think you can jam, and don't engage something with drones unless you're feeling suicidal. Orbit as close as you can and pray the target stays jammed for long enough to kill it; you probably won't live through more than one missed jam cycle. The ECM should reliably keep most frigates completely locked down, but cruisers are a lot more risky. If it turns out you can't kill whoever you attacked you can always run away. Also, most fleets are happy to have an ECM ship.

Why don't you include rigs? T1 frigate rigs are so ridiculously cheap, it would be unrealistic that any pvp'er (even complete noobs) would not fit them to a ship =S

ReplyDeleteSome rigs are inexpensive, but others are very expensive, even for T1. For example the Small Core Defence Field Extender I comes in at 750,000 isk. Three of them would be over 2 million, which would defeat the 'cheapfleet' concept. Also, rigs require some additional skills that may not be possible for new players (those most interested in the cheapfleet).
So it was just easier to not include them.
Here is a fit for baiting rifters and other common PVP frigs in belts. Just hit a belt and start ratting in low-sec, and keep an eye on your dscan. Rifters are common enough that one will attack soon enough. If you find one, you can, of course, chase it down and engage it. It will permajam the Rifter. I'd keep a Gallente meta3 jammer in the cargo in case an Incursus is operating in the area. With heat, this ship can permajam an Incursus as well for 5m. If fighting the Incursus, make sure to web his drones and engage them first.

I noticed this is similar to a fit above, I did come up with this independently, but it seemed logical. It's a slightly different twist than multispecs, which I didn't think had enough jam strength on a frigate.
For fleet work, I give you the fleet Griffen. I toyed with the idea of putting a Medium Shield Extender on, and while it would certainly fit, it only adds about 1k EHP, which is approximately that of a wet paper towel. I argue a 4th racial jammer gives more flexibility and benefit to a larger gang. A Catalyzed Cold-Gas I Arcjet Thrusters is kept in cargo and should be swapped on in place of a racial if roaming. This allows for the cloak + MWD trick at gate camps to get back to the gate. The offline rr can be used after fights and is a heatsink for overheating the racial jammers.

This is a great 1v1 rifter which can cause a lot of wtf moments amongst your opponents. Get into range, start shooting and then in a surprise move, begin with the neut, booster and armour repair. Timing is everything with this fit as if you are not careful, you can easily cap yourself out.

ReplyDeleteThis is a Punisher fitting designed for up close and personal solo work. It will excel against other frigs and turret cruisers. Simply set a tight orbit and balance your repper usage with the neut. You do have a little bit of buffer so taking a few hits won't do you in. The blasters will take care of the rest.

ReplyDeleteWhen point has been called, warp to 70 on your tackler and ruin some poor turret ships day. Works especially well on Hurricanes, which are almost as common as Rifters in lowsec. The guns and tiny tank are just there in case they manage to get within Drone control range of you.

This is a very low-skill tacking ship, basically an "Ares for a total noob". It's not meant for DPS and is not going catch the really fast stuff, but it does (with practice) have some survivability with its speed and agility and should make a suitable practice boat for someone learning to fly as a dedicated fleet tackler say around low-sec (think Faction War) or chasing/setting up to catch high-sec war targets. As it's not a DPS boat I've added a Hornet EC-300 rather than a combat drone, for a little extra survivability. Scan res is 1220. Did a quick costing and it was under 1 mill all in.
